Scottish Opera: Puccini’s Il trittico
Scottish Opera and Welsh National Opera present a new co-production of Puccini’s Il trittico, comprising three one-act operas that explore themes of love, loss, and family. This marks the first time that renowned director Sir David McVicar has collaborated with Scottish Opera on this triptych, which includes Il tabarro (The Cloak), Suor Angelica (Sister Angelica), and Gianni Schicchi. Il trittico will be performed at the Theatre Royal Glasgow on 11, 15, and 18 March 2023, and at the Festival Theatre Edinburgh on 22 and 25 March 2023, all at 6 pm. The cast, led by Music Director Stuart Stratford, features Roland Wood, Sunyoung Seo, Viktor Antipenko, Francesca Chiejina, Julian Close, Jamie MacDougall, Louise Winter, Máire Flavin, Karen Cargill, Elgan Llŷr Thomas, and Sioned Gwen Davies. The three operas feature distinct scores that are united by Puccini’s artistic vision. Il tabarro tells the story of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage, Suor Angelica follows the life of a nun who has lost touch with her family, and Gianni Schicchi depicts a dysfunctional family caught in a web of deceit. The start time of Il trittico has been moved earlier to 6 pm to accommodate a longer interval for dinner and drinks, offering audiences a unique and immersive opera experience. The production is proudly supported by Dunard Fund, The Alexander Gibson Circle, Scottish Opera’s ‘Play a Supporting Role’ Appeal, and The Scottish Opera Endowment Trust.
