After marking their 15 year history with a sold-out festival at the iconic Printworks in London, we are excited to welcome the renowned record label Erased Tapes for a takeover of NCH on May 20th. Headlined by UK electronic producer Rival Consoles and legendary ensemble Penguin Cafe, the line-up also features a Kiasmos DJ set from Janus Rasmussen, live performance from Galway-based American songsmith Peter Broderick, the return of Japanese voice artist Hatis Noit after her much applauded Haunted Dancehall performance last year, modular synth set from Brooklyn composer and Dawn of Midi-drummer Qasim Naqvi, first Irish solo show from Berlin-based cellist and long-time Nils Frahm collaborator Anne Müller, plus a DJ set from the latest Erased Tapes family member, French avant-RnB producer Crayon.
London-based producer Ryan Lee West better known under the name Rival Consoles, is notable for making synthesisers sound human and atmospheric. Over the course of a critically acclaimed fifteen-year career, Rival Consoles’ music has diversified from the challenging electronic output of his early EPs to gradually become more conceptual and metamorphic, such as Articulation (2020) which used drawings and sketches to imagine and develop each track, to Overflow (2021), which explored themes of the human and emotional consequences of life surrounded by advancing technologies including social media.
Penguin Cafe are back with a lovingly produced 10th anniversary reissue of their debut album, titled A Matter of Life… 2021. Besides being completely remastered and pressed on vinyl for the very first time, the record also features a brand new 2021 recording of lead single Harry Piers, a song commemorating Arthur Jeffes’ late father and Penguin Cafe Orchestra founder Simon Jeffes.
Kiasmos is made up of BAFTA-winning Icelandic composer Ólafur Arnalds, known for his unique blend of minimal piano and string compositions with electronic sounds, and Janus Rasmussen from the Faroe Islands, known as the mastermind of the electro-pop outfit Bloodgroup. Based in Reykjavík, Arnalds used to work as a sound engineer, often for Rasmussen’s other projects, where the two musicians discovered their common love for minimal, experimental music. They eventually became best friends, often hanging out in their studio, exploring electronic sounds.
Ireland based American songsmith Peter Broderick most recently released Piano Works Vol. 1 (Floating in Tucker’s Basement) — a new comprehensive album of solo piano recordings. Shining a light on the artist’s ongoing piano-based compositions, this release offers an opportunity to celebrate his more intimate work. There isn’t a more unique entry into a musical journey than that of Japanese voice artist Hatis Noit, than her much anticipated debut album Aura. Her musical awakening took place at the tender age of sixteen during a trek to Buddha’s birthplace in Nepal. One morning when staying at a women’s temple she came across a female monk singing Buddhist chants whose otherworldly sounds moved her so intensely that she was instantly aware of the visceral power of the human voice; a primal and instinctive instrument that connects us to the very essence of humanity, nature and our universe. From that moment she knew singing was her calling.
Pakistani-American composer and drummer of the cult trio Dawn of Midi, Qasim Naqvi made his Erased Tapes debut with the analog synthesizer suite Chronology.
Berlin based cellist and composer Anne Müller’s Heliopause follows several Erased Tapes releases featuring Anne, including her celebrated collaboration with Nils Frahm titled 7fingers, appearances on Ólafur Arnalds and Nils Frahm’s Collaborative Works, Nils Frahm’s All Melody.
Cementing himself as an integral part of the French Indie music scene, Crayon, real name Lauren Larue, signed to the highly respected Erased Tapes imprint in 2021 to herald in the next chapter of his career. His 2-track EP, consisting of ‘Misplaced’ and ‘Ithinkso’, sees him going back to his electronic, UK-infused roots.
