New Releases of the Week (3 September 2021)
Silverbacks – Wear My Medals
‘Wear My Medals’ is the latest release from Dublin indie-pop-punk five-piece Silverbacks, the first release since their debut album last year, Fad. The single is also the band’s first release with London record label Full Time Hobby. The choppy, fizzing track renders a recurring, ringing motif on electric guitar which at times is mirrored by singer and bassist Emma Hanlon’s vocals. The track is accompanied by a new video which was directed by US animator and painter Lauren Gregrory. Purchase ‘Wear My medals’ on Bandcamp: https://silverbacks.bandcamp.com/track/wear-my-medals
Maria Kelly – The Sum of the In-Between
Alt-folk singer-songwriter Maria Kelly has this week released ‘the sum of the in-between’ – the latest single, and title track, from her upcoming debut album on VETA Records. The gentle, swirling song with sparkling motifs on strings combined with Kelly’s soft-spoken vocals follows previous releases from earlier this year, ‘Martha’, ‘eight hours’ and ‘good enough’, all of which will also feature on the album due for release in October. Commenting on the new song and album, Kelly said ‘“the sum of the in-between” is a long list, laying out every messy, chaotic, complicated thing about me. It’s about giving myself permission to look directly at this current version of myself without criticising everything I find… I guess I’m saying that the current me matters more than this rose-tinted version from my past, or this ideal version that I long to be. So, maybe it’s just time I gave her a break’. Visit: https://www.mariakellymusic.co/
Fynch – Canal Straddle
Dublin rapper Fynch has today released a new single ‘Canal Straddle’, following the release of ‘Soon’ earlier this year. With a smooth, lo-fi sound, the track is set against the backdrop of Dublin city and tells a story about the relationship between the artist, his art and his hometown. Commenting on the track, Fynch said ‘I suppose with Covid, you get a lot of time to reflect on yourself… I was thinking about my music and the strange two-pronged relationship I have with it. One minute, I think I’m the greatest wordsmith known to man and the next I’m reminding myself to not quit my day job. Ultimately, that’s what “Canal Straddle” is, for me. This brash introduction that I’m an “underdog, still Goliath in the ends, a Leviathan” encapsulates how I routinely view myself.’ Visit: https://www.fynch.ie/
Cat Dowling – Freedom
Indie-pop singer Cat Dowling has recently signed with Irish record label FIFA and this week shared a new video for her single ‘Freedom’, released in June. The video for the song was created by filmmaker Alba Lahoz and filmed on Donabate beach and Dollymount Strand in Dublin, featuring Dowling’s three children. The running and playing of the children in the winter sun mirrors the sentiment of freedom that the bright and lush song encapsulates. ‘Freedom’ will feature on Dowling’s next album, due for release on the label in November.
