Music of Celebration
Sestina Music presents Music of Celebration: ceremonial music from the courts of the European Baroque era.
The programme opens with G.F. Handel’s well-loved coronation anthem for King George II of England, Zadok the Priest, and continues to include Jean Baptiste Lully’s sumptuous setting of the Te Deum, for the French court of Louis XIV.
Come, ye Sons of Art by Henry Purcell, was written as a birthday ode for Queen Mary of England in 1694 and includes the famous duet Sound the trumpet. Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata BWV 29 Wir danken dir, Gott, wir danken dir was written to celebrate the ‘ratswechsel’ (inauguration) of the Leipzig town council in Germany (1731). The programme concludes with Handel’s Sing unto God, written for the marriage of Fredrik Prince of Wales to Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha in 1736.
Join Sestina Music and their 20-piece period ensemble for celebratory choruses and virtuosic vocal arias, written for the finest singers of the day. A celebration of music not to be missed!
