Featuring the perfect combo of organ and trumpet, Matilda Lloyd and Richard Gowers bring their highly acclaimed UK tour to Portico.

Matilda Lloyd

Hailed as ​​“remarkable" by the Daily Telegraph, Matilda Lloyd is a fast-rising young artist with exceptional poise and musicality. She captivates audiences and critics alike with her artistry and communication, with her “flawless sound and virtuosic technique” bringing a unique flair to every performance.​​​

Matilda comments: “The trumpet is my voice, allowing me to express myself and share my music. I’m passionate about challenging people’s perceptions of the trumpet as a solo instrument: maximising its versatility and expanding the repertoire for brass players of the next generation.”

A student of the renowned Swedish virtuoso Håkan Hardenberger, she was prize-winner in the recent Ellsworth Smith International Competition and has previously won Eric Aubier International Competition in Rouen, France, as well as the BBC Young Musician of the Year Brass Final.

Richard Gowers

Richard Gowers, born 1994 in Cambridge, is a British pianist, organist and conductor. As of January 2023 he he is Director of Music at St George’s Hanover Square, Handel’s church in London.

He studied at the Mendelssohn Conservatoire, Leipzig, King’s College, Cambridge, where he was Organ Scholar, and at the Royal Academy of Music, where he took a Masters in Piano Accompaniment with Michael Dussek and Joseph Middleton, specialising in Lieder. He currently studies with Nathan Laube at the Stuttgart Conservatoire.

As a Lieder pianist he has appeared at Leeds Lieder Festival, Wigmore Hall and as a finalist in several song competitions, including the Helmut Deutsch Liedwettbewerb in Vienna and the Wigmore Hall International Song Competition. He has made radio appearances with the BBC Singers, and on Radio 3’s In Tune with Mary Bevan.
