Karaikudi S. Subramanian, born in 1944, represents the 9th generation of the illustrious Karaikudi Vina Tradition. The Karaikudi style of vina playing is very well known for its clarity of expression, precision in details and its strong conviction in the fundamentals of music making. As 7th generation vina players, Karaikudi Subbarama Iyer (elder) and Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer (younger), known by their sobriquet ‘Karaikudi Veenai Brothers', established a concert performing style in the early part of the 20th century. Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer was amongst the first recipients of the National Award conferred on by the first President of India, Sri Rajendra Prasad, in 1952 after India gained independence.

Karaikudi S. Subramanian (KSS), grandson of the elder of the Karaikudi Brothers, was adopted by Karaikudi Sambasiva Iyer to continue the Karaikudi lineage.
