Jack Talty Appointed Lecturer in Irish Traditional Music at UCC
The Department of Music at University College Cork has announced the appointment of Dr Jack Talty as Lecturer in Irish Traditional Music.
Talty, from Lissycasey in Clare, is a renowned concertina player. He is also a composer, record producer, researcher and academic. He has contributed to over 80 albums as a musician, producer, arranger and engineer, and in 2011, established the traditional music label Raelach Records.
In 2015, Talty and the group Ensemble Ériu were awarded the TG4 Gradam Ceoil music collaboration award. He was appointed Traditional Artist in Residence at UCC in 2018 and as the inaugural Creator in Residence with Maurice Gunning at the Irish Traditional Music Archive in 2019. Talty was also awarded the Liam O’Flynn Award in April 2021, the output of which will be a performance at the Tradition Now series at the National Concert Hall this Sunday 3 October.
He is a board member of Glór in Ennis, and the traditional arts organisation Trad Ireland/Traid Éireann, who commissioned him to research and write the report Navigating the Traditional Arts Sector in Ireland, which was published in December 2020.
Talty’s academic work has been published by Oxford University Press and he was awarded the Irish Research Council’s Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Award for his doctoral research from the University of Limerick.
His academic interests include creative practice and artistic research, curriculum and pedagogical design for traditional and folk musics, canonicity, music institutionalisation, and performance studies.
