Composition and Improvisation using Modes and Melodies of the World

Tuesday, 30 March 2021, 4.00pm

Dates: Tuesdays, 30th March - 27th April, 2021, 4-6pm

Course Fee: £100

The course will be based on music theory and is aimed at instrument players, vocalists, composers and music producers who would like to expand their playing, composing and/or improvising by learning the theory behind different melodies, harmonies and scales from across the globe. Topics will include, among others: modes in Ethiopian music and their integration in jazz and improvisation; microtonality in Arabic scales; horn lines in salsa and Cuban music; modulation in Brazilian music and gospel-style chord substitutions.

Western notation will be provided, but we can accommodate musicians who are more comfortable learning by ear. Participants are welcome to bring their instrument to the class in order to apply what we are learning on the go, but this is not obligatory.

This course will be led by musician Eliane Correa
