Drama, betrayal, suffering - Bach's 'St Matthew Passion' tells the story of the crucifixion through a dramatic arc of extraordinary choruses, heart-rending arias and narrative recitative. This remarkable work still has the power to inspire and awe audiences today, nearly 300 years since it was first performed. A revival of the piece in 1829 by Felix Mendelssohn, describing it as “the greatest of all Christian works”, sparked a broader movement of interest in Bach’s music which has stood the test of time.
The Irish Baroque Orchestra and Sestina bring this piece to life in March, directed by Peter Whelan, with James Way singing the role of Evangelist.
